Indulge in Mooncakes Guilt-Free

Indulge in Mooncakes Guilt-Free
By Osakakuma, 21 September 2021
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also commonly known as the Mooncake Festival, is widely celebrated in most Chinese Asian communities. It is usually celebrated with family and friends coming together to enjoy mooncakes during this festive period, while moon-gazing and lighting up lanterns. The festive falls on the day where the moon is known to be at its fullest. As such, mooncakes are made to be round and eaten together with the family as it symbolizes reunion and togetherness. As a must-have traditional Chinese pastry during the celebration, a mooncake carries mixed feelings; some love it because it is so delicious and addictive while others hate it because it screams caloric nightmare and can cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. Although mooncakes now come in a wide range of flavours, most of them are similar in that they generally contain high calories, carbohydrates and fats, while being low in fibre, protein or any other nutritionally values.
With the ever-expanding range of flavours and creative combinations, it is getting harder to resist the lure of mooncakes. Since we have established that mooncake is not one of the healthiest fooods to have around, and clearly refraining from having any during the festival is highly unlikely (we are only humans), here are some of the supplements that you can pair with to enjoy your mooncake without fearing that it will expand your waistline.
Yamamoto Fat/Sugar Cleanse Tea (S$10.90)
Yamamoto Fat Cleanse Tea (pictured left) is a tea supplement that pairs perfectly with mooncakes. With the taste similar to barley tea, it contains a blend of tochu tea, cassia seed tea, barley, brown rice, oolong tea, pu’er tea, mulberry leaf tea, licorice, green tea extract and kelp. It aids digestion by breaking down oily and fatty foods. This fat cleanse tea can also help to reduce the sensation of greasiness in the mouth and has the ability to emulsify fats, a process that actually helps to remove oils from the mouth and your digestion – in other words, the perfect marriage.
Yamamoto Sugar Cleanse Tea (pictured right) can also be paired perfectly with mooncakes as when you consume foods with carbohydrates, they are digested into sugar. Similar to the taste of the fat cleanse tea, it contains a blend of ingredients such as mulberry leaf, senna tea, banana leaf, guava leaf and persimmon leaf. It helps to lower the blood sugar and blood pressure level while maintaining the health of the liver and kidney functions.
Svelty’s Diet Supplements
As the number one diet supplement brand in Japan, Svelty pride themselves on having a “holistic approach to good health.” This brand understands that the number on your weighing scale does not reflect the healthy weight, rather it is the way your body feels that matters most. Svelty Pakkun Yeast Triple Premium (S$25.90, pictured top) on the other hand, contains 3 times more active digestive enzyme to help break down sugar and carbohydrates more effectively. It is also formulated with Liposan Ultra that helps bind more fats and prevent fats from being fully absorbed by the body.
Svelty Pakkun Yeast (S$38.90, pictured middle) is formulated with active digestive enzyme to help break down sugar and carbohydrates. It also contains Liposan Ultra that helps to bind fat so your body does not absorb it all, making it easier to be passed out of the body. It can also aid in improving bowel movement for people who are always consuming low-fibre food, like mooncakes.
You may also want to check out Svelty Black Ginger (S$40.90, pictured bottom) as it can boost your metabolism and enhances body’s natural ability to burn more fat. It contains 5 “Black Power” ingredients, including black ginger, black garlic, black onion, black pepper and black vinegar that can inhibit absorption of fat while regulating irregular bowel movement. This product is especially more effective when you consume it before working out, since it helps to increase your metabolism.
